I Lucid Dreamed for the First Time, and It Was Awesome

In my 20s, I wrote down my dreams almost every morning, studied Jung and symbolism, and read and re-read books like Ann Faraday’s Dream Game and Denise Linn's The Hidden Power of Dreams.

I was obsessed with dream work, eager to learn as much as I could, eventually discovering that beneath the twisted symbolism were answers to our life issues that occasionally predicted the future!

But not until a few nights ago had I ever lucid dreamed.

And, boy, was it worth the wait.  It was amazing!

What is a lucid dream?  In my understanding, it is a dream where you know you are dreaming and can therefore manipulate the experience.

The idea is that if you can get in that strange and wonderful state where you are basically simultaneously asleep and awake, you can learn to use those skills in your waking life -- manifesting, creating, and healing in a deeper way.

To say this was a spiritual experience is an understatement!

This first lucid dream was triggered by the fact that, recently, a dear friend of mine and her partner (kundalini yoga teachers, Kewal Nam and Atma, respectively) were experimenting with lucid dreaming themselves.  Atma’s Tibetan Buddhist tradition teaches that many healing techniques can be strengthened and practiced through lucid dreaming.

Cool, right?!  Yeah, Kewal Nam and I thought so too.

So when Kewal shared her latest lucid dream experience with me, giving techniques on how to shift into that state, I declared my desire to have it happen too.

Not two weeks later, when I least expected it, it did!

Here’s how to prompt a lucid dream:
1.     Set a “trigger.”   I had read years ago that if you can look at your hands in your dream, it is a way to know if you are dreaming.  That is exactly what happened to me, although Kewal had suggested that you could also elicit it by reading something (only to look away and look back to different words) or by seeing your reflection.   I believe that the “hands” notion worked for me because it had been instilled in my psyche for so long, and also, my mind was freshly prepared for lucid dreaming because of my recent intention to do it.
2.    In your dream, ask yourself if you are dreaming.  Because my trigger was set, when I saw my hands, I immediately said to myself in my dream, “I think I’m dreaming.”  I looked around and realized that the scenario was bizarre, which confirmed it.  I got really excited, knowing that I could now do whatever I wanted…because I was dreaming and I knew it!
3.    Have a goal.  I now know that it’s really nice to know what you want to do in a lucid dream before you go into that state, because I was so excited to be lucid dreaming, I sort of didn’t know what to do first.  So I flew.  It took a moment of getting through self-doubt (can I really fly?), but soon I was off, soaring into a mystical sky!
4.    Believe in the magic of dreams.   The Universe is huge and mysterious and amazing.  To close yourself off to the power of your subconscious, or dreamtime, or spirit guides or anything beyond logic is to certainly block yourself from experiencing the powerful experience of a lucid dream.  The next day, the world looked fresh and clear and new, and I was filled with gratitude and wonder, and I experienced a flow and knowing that was almost child-like.

So what happened in my dream?  Well...

...while I was flying, I looked over a city that I knew was the future.  It was vivid green and submerged in a gorgeous tree canopy with lovely sleek, silver buildings speckled throughout, peeking out above the trees, columnar-like.  It was full of hope, and I believe it was a reminder that this is the direction the world will go as we individually and collectively develop a higher consciousness.  It was nature and city in harmony.

The dream continued, with me going in and out of awareness, and several times, I had the opportunity (including seeing my reflection, which was smiling while I made funny faces at it) to remind myself I was dreaming.   At one point, I remembered Atma’s learning, and I beamed out some light to the world for healing.

After all….”Life what is it, but a dream?”

Summer Solstice & Healing with the Sun

I'm a sun worshipper.  I admit it.  I absolutely ADORE the sun.  Not in the bake-all-day-with-tanning-oil kind of way, but in the ahhhh-that-feels-so-good-on-my-skin/face/soul kind of way, and I must have it, often.

It might have to do with the fact that I'm a Leo, with Leo moon, rising, Merc & Venus? (The Sun rules Leo.)

Regardless of why, here today, on the longest day of the year, Summer Solstice 2013, I offer you a meditation on the Solar Plexus.   It's the energy center nestled in right above the belly button, and it has to do with personal power and is linked to the color yellow.

It seems that a lot of us are in need of healing of this center.  If you've ever been in power struggles with someone, or you find yourself doing things out of obligation rather than your own will, or someone is really angry at you and may be dumping some energetic toxins onto you, you may have experienced imbalances here.

I know I have!

On a mission to learn how to heal this chakra (besides being aware and making self-empowering choices), a friend and I were trading ideas, which included kundalini yoga sets for the navel, wearing yellow, and asking and envisioning any energetic cords between ill-intentioned people be cut and healed.

One of our favorite ideas was to put some water in a glass in the sunlight, add some yellow (my friend chose marigolds! And look at that big rock -- it's citrine!) and after a few hours, drink up!  Set the intention of reclaiming your power and nourishing your solar plexus...and you're, ahem, GOLDEN!

So, in celebration of the longest day of the year, with all it's hot, active, and yang energy, take a break, sit in some shade, set your intention, and...

...bottoms up!  Hopefully, you'll begin to feel more centered and strong your whole life long!

(Pina coladas may work too!)

I Heart Yoga

This beautiful video inspired me.  Entirely.  I adore this guy, and I love that he had the insight to document his process.

Then it inspired me to post a blog I wrote a year ago and never put up.  (I have a few of these that are waiting in the wings for the right time.)

Here it is:

I love yoga.  Yoga has saved my life (slight exaggeration, but only slight).  It’s my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balm.  It’s my community, my medicine, my thing-that-keeps-me-balanced.  In the past, when I’ve written gratitude lists, having access to good yoga definitely makes the top five.  If you have tried yoga, and you didn’t like it, try another teacher.  If you have never tried it, well, I guess you don’t know what you are missing out on.

Because I want to write about things that inspire me for The Sparklit, I must write about my friend, Heather “Radja” Duplex, who recently posted a video about being committed to yoga, mostly because, while what she said in the video was great, what had the most impact was how lovely and happy she seemed.  I haven’t seen Heather face to face in probably five years.

Heather and I met in Los Angeles in 2002 through a mutual friend, an artist (hi Todd!), and the times I remember with Heather were full of laughter, girl talk, and a little bit of curiosity on my end.  After all, she was SO dedicated to yoga like nothing I’ve ever seen, and she cooked and ate things like kale and quinoa as if those foods were the most natural things to grab for in the grocery store, and she was a Reiki master, but really didn’t talk about that much.  At the time, I was still in the early years of being a yoga student (5 years in approximately, and I now know that is nothing), and I had recently taken my Reiki I training, and although I had been a vegetarian for a while, I had never made kale in my life.

Heather and I would lose touch from time to time (I moved to Idaho, she was traveling a lot), but whenever we would see each other again, it was with joy and interest.  I watched as her life evolved beautifully – taking the yoga further and falling in love with Prem and eventually moving to Kauai (a favorite place of mine), and now Bali (where I am so wanting to go one day, soon please?).  She is truly an example of a person who walks her walk, talks her talk, and has followed her passion for yoga and her desire to live authentically to a place that few of us dare to tread.

I was so happy to see the videos that she and Prem have posted for several reasons.  (Go to their website, www.ashtangaworld.com for those and more.)  First of all, I am excited for their dedication to yoga and to the yoga community.  Second, Heather looks gorgeous as usual, and I just have to say, I can guarantee this woman has never had botox!  (She would laugh heartily at that suggestion!) Her appearance is a result of clean living, my friends – dedication to yogic practice, including what she eats (and drinks).  That’s not to say she won’t have a piece of chocolate cake or a beer from time to time, but seriously, this woman keeps her system clean.  And it shows.  Look at her eyes!  Shimmery clear gorgeous.  A mermaid on land, I like to call her.  (I dare you to guess her age.)

So, if you are inclined to go to Bali, or take your yoga practice to new heights, these are the people to call.  I have never met Prem myself, but I trust Heather’s judgement.  Ha! And so should you.

Looking forward to the next time our paths cross, Heather!  xoxo

----------------------------------

I encourage y'all to do/try yoga.  It will better your life in every way!  If you are a beginner and you're nervous about not being flexible or falling down or anything, just chill out.  Stop with the excuses; you're only cheating yourself.  We were all beginners at some time.  Trust me, we have all looked and felt dumb, and I think it's probably part of the process of getting out of the ego!  Since yoga is so new to the West, I guarantee that many people in the class started as adults and know exactly where you are.  More than that, no one really cares what you look like.  Plus, you get as much benefit from being stiff as a board and MOVING than the gumby next to you.   Yoga has nothing to do about how "good" you are at it.  I know this is shocking to our Western brains, but it's true.  A good teacher will make you feel welcome in class.  Please try several teachers as there is a ton of variety in yoga and the teacher affects your experience entirely!  My first yoga was Kundalini.  I have since added Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Sivananda, among others to the mix.

If you need names of teachers in Birmingham, AL; Los Angeles, CA; Sun Valley, ID, I have personal experience in all places, and I'd be happy to recommend!  (Austin, TX and NYC and Mobile too!)

Doreen Virtue claims that the ancient yogis infused prayers into the poses.  I believe it.  And after watching the video at the top of the page, don't you believe it too?

BEST HOLIDAY GIFT:  Give someone a gift certificate to yoga!

I found this floating around FaceBook.  This woman is 83 years old!!!

One Client's Feng Shui of Love, Before & After

A Los Angeles client, Laura, recently reached out with glowing reports!  If you question the power of feng shui, question no more.  The proof is the pictures...

Laura had called me for a long-distance mini-consultation -- one room with one goal -- to find L-O-V-E.  Not that she was sitting home on the weekends (or weeknights for that matter).  In fact, she admitted that she had dated over 60 men in the past couple of years!  Her concern was the quality of man that she was attracting, not the quantity.  She was ready to replace her player tendencies, grow up, and find "the one."

Because she shares an apartment, it was easy to hone in on her bedroom, for it's the one place that is all hers where we could go to town with the feng shui cures.

And boy, did we.  The feng shui no-no's were rampant!  Check out these photos she sent me.

where are the bedside tables? and eek, a mirrored closet

this closet could be arranged much better

computer in the bedroom - no!  desk at angle - no!

every item needs a home!

oy, clutter!

this bed could be way more inviting
When I received these photos, I took a deep breath.  You never know if a client is going to "hear" you or not, and frankly, this one was going to take some work.  As a feng shui consultant, I could easily see the issues in her love life from simple things, such as a computer in the bedroom and the lack of two side tables.  Not to mention the disorganization!

Once on the phone, she confirmed my suspicions that she doesn't sleep well at night.  We also discovered an interesting theme: there were little girl images tucked here and there.  These items were sending "Peter Pan" messages to her subconscious.  Hmmmm.

After a juicy chat, including the ins and outs of the types of guys she was dating, I gave her a list of cures not for the faint of heart.  I did not hold back.  She called me for life improvement, and I explained how by simply rearranging her home space, those improvements will come about!

Cut to:  Six or so weeks later.

SUCCESS!

Here's a combo of the few emails she sent:

Hi Katie,
I thought I should update you on what's happening on this end. I'm sure everything is connected, but I dropped all the bad guys and feng shui'd the crap out of my room. Now I have four major job offers, I quit smoking (now on week 3!!!) and have signed up for yoga for relaxation/clarification purposes. Plus, the quality of guys that I'm meeting is much better, but I'm less focused on them.

...Sleep is a LOT better --- and I feel healthier and less exhausted when I wake up :)

I did not rest until I made everything good! Accenting with red & yellow, bronze & grey!
YOU are awesome. Thank you again for all your help --- didn't realize my life was going to change so much as a result of feng shui!

...You're awesome Katie and the world should know. I have a sweet new job, a zest for life and have weeded out all the crap men in my life...I know what I want from myself AND everyone else thanks to you and feng shui. For real.
Laura's new and improved bedroom!

Amazing, right?  I LOVE it when a client takes the cures to the next level.  Of course she's sleeping better!  With the more organized space, her belongings are not tugging at her attention anymore when she's going off to dreamland.  The curtains over the mirror help immensely.  And the bedside tables ground the energy of the room and are inviting to a new partner.  And gone were the little girls except for one special one to remind her to keep her youthful spirit.  Much more grown up all around!

Now, you may say, "Katie, she hasn't met her man yet.  Wasn't LOVE the goal?" And I will reiterate what she and I talked about on our call.  It'll happen, but she obviously (on a subconscious level) wanted to clean her own act up first.  After all, she wants to attract the best guy out there, but how can she when she's not being her best self?

I look forward to some more emails from her regarding her love life.  I have a feeling she'll have good news to report.  Fingers crossed!  But in the meantime, I'm glad she's enjoying a more healthy, thriving version of herself.

[NOTE: If you're interested in feng shui, send me an email or give me a call.  If you're curious but hesitant, I can answer your questions.  I'm available in person or from a distance, and I customize the session to you.  If you'd rather begin with a mini-session, I'm happy to oblige.  All it takes is the will to make improvements in your life, and I'll help with the rest.]
